The Legacy of San Francisco: A Beacon of Hope
San Francisco has long been a beacon of hope and progress for the LGBTQ+ community. From the first Pride parade in 1970 to the enduring legacy of Harvey Milk, this city has been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights for decades. Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, transformed San Francisco and the LGBTQ+ movement with his unwavering commitment to equality. His legacy continues to inspire the fight for equality and justice.
Honoring Activism: Cleve Jones and Honey Mahogany
This Pride Month, we honor the contributions of activists like Cleve Jones and Honey Mahogany. Cleve Jones, a tireless advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ rights, created the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a powerful tribute to those lost to AIDS. Honey Mahogany, the first Black and transgender person to chair the San Francisco Democratic Party, has been a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ justice, shaping policy and supporting trans youth.
Intersectionality: Pride and Juneteenth
As we celebrate Pride, we also recognize Juneteenth and the importance of intersectionality in our fight for justice. Juneteenth, marking the day the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, reminds us of the ongoing struggle for racial equity. At D&A, we are committed to advancing racial and LGBTQ+ equity, understanding that the fight for justice must include all marginalized communities.
